International Men's Day 2023

Why We Have an International Men's Day

Some may question the need for an International Men’s Day (IMD). However, in countries like Australia, IMD is a vital opportunity to engage in global conversations surrounding manhood, masculinity, and men’s issues. It allows us to highlight the social challenges men and boys face, positively impact our communities, and celebrate the diverse identities and contributions of men and boys.

The Importance of IMD in Australia for Dads In Distress

In Australia, IMD is celebrated on November 19th every year. This day has been recognized since the early 1990s as an opportunity to raise awareness about men’s health, promote gender equality, and celebrate positive masculinity. It also serves as a platform for organizations like Dads in Distress to share their resources and support separated and separating dads facing challenges.

Dads in Distress is a national organization providing support for fathers since 1999. We offer a range of services, including our helpline, peer support groups, and online forums, to help Dads experiencing relationship breakdown, family breakdown, custodial issues and parental alienation. IMD gives visibility to organizations like Dads in Distress, allowing us to reach a wider audience and offer our support to more dads.

Raising Awareness About Men's Issues

IMD also provides an opportunity to shed light on men’s and boys’ social challenges. These include mental health issues such as depression and suicide, workplace hazards, violence against men, fatherhood and family roles, and male reproductive health. The goal is to generate conversations and promote understanding, compassion, and support for men facing these issues.

Celebrating Postive masculinity

IMD also celebrates the diverse identities and contributions of men and boys. It encourages men to embrace their unique qualities, challenge toxic masculinity, and redefine what it means to be a man in today’s society. It also recognizes the contributions of men in various fields, including science, technology, sports, arts, and entrepreneurship. IMD serves as a reminder that masculinity is not a one-size-fits-all concept and allows us to celebrate the diversity within the male population.
